American guard Kevin Kruger has been let go by Bulgarian champions Lukoil Academic. He has been at the club for just over 3 weeks, but now asked to be released from his contract, citing "family reasons".

Kruger played 5 games for Lukoil and they lost 3 of those - once in the Bulgarian NBL (versus Levski) and twice in the Eurocup (versus UNICS Kazan and Dynamo Moscow). Yeh, he has been playing well, averaging 14.8 ppg, 4.8 apg and 2 rpg in 32.6 minutes per contest.

It was to free roster space for Kruger that Lukoil released their previous starting point guard Antonio Burks. They have recently also signed with another American guard - Toni Akins, but his arrival has been delayed for a while.

In one of his blogs Kruger says he feels homesick and it has been tough for him to adjust. He also says whenever he asks for something on his contract, regardless of the situation, the standard reply is "Tomorrow." The American player never managed to get used to the Bulgarian life style and has eaten "at a Chinese restaurant down the street" about 10 times out of his first 15 days in Sofia. In the blog entry, entitled "A tough transition" Kruger also expresses his gratitude to Maria Aladjova, a former volleyball player of the team at his college - the UNLV Lady Rebels. Reportedly, she has spent a lot of time helping him "going places" around Sofia, and yet he hasn't felt comfortable.

"Off the court I don't do much. I have downloaded and watched every episode of "The Office" at least three times each", Kruger writes. "I talk to my parents every day. Before I left I bought a Blackberry with a global plan, so I use the blackberry messenger to talk to them and Shaina, my girlfriend."

In the same blog entry the American also reflects on the unlucky defeat by just one point at the hands of UNICS Kazan, which he describes as one of the hardest losses he has ever had. He also talks about the crowds at basketball games in Bulgaria.

Lukoil Academic's next game in the NBL is tonight, at home versus Rilski Sportist, and chances for the visting team to upset them are there, considering the absence of Kruger.
