Last season center Lidiya Varbanova played in the Bulgarian championship for the team of Haskovo 2012. She confirmed for BGbasket.com that she will probably play another season and that it will probably be the last of her career. Here’s what she said about it:

“99% sure I will play another season and 99% sure it will be my last. This is my decision, I plan moving to America and get a master’s degree. I want to come back to my coach’s university (coach Mike Doherty who now works at Washington State University)."

She said more about her time in America in the ‘90s: “The level of professionalism there is amazing and I have never seen this in any team I played for in Europe and they are many. These are people who support you constantly no matter if you are up or down. The best thing that can happen to a player is to play on their team. This is my opinion and if you ask me for my best years, they were the four I spent at the university.”

In the end of July in Sofia begins the European championship for under 18 men and Lidiya’s son Milan Milkov will play there for the Macedonian national team. “My son plays for Feni in Kavadarci. This is good for him because he is young but he already has experience with the professional team and he develops”, she said.

For the championship for women under 20 in Sofia Varbanova said: “I like the Hungarians, they play pretty well. Our team plays hard and has the potential to be in the top 3 and I hope it succeeds. My advice for them is to learn from the professionals in the Bulgarian women teams and develop every day.”
